About the Event
On November 13, at St Ann’s Church, Dublin, two distinctive ensembles unite for a rare cross-cultural concert.
Westland Trio Baroque Ensemble, Ireland’s first all-Chinese Baroque group with an active international profile, joins forces with Lanyin Minyue, Ireland’s first Chinese traditional music ensemble, to weave sounds from Europe to China.
This program will celebrates two golden ages, Baroque period of Europe(1600-1750) and Tang Dynasty of China(618-907), blending ornamentation, grace, and innovation. Across time and culture, strings and bamboo, harpsichord and zither meet, creating a soundscape that is both ancient and new.
Westland Trio Baroque Ensemble
Westland Trio Baroque Ensemble is a dynamic chamber group developed from the Dublin-based Westland Trio. Founded in 2023, it has quickly gained recognition for its fresh approach to Baroque and early music, presenting over ten concerts each year across the European Union and China. In July 2025, the ensemble was appointed Ensemble in Residence at the AMEROPA International Chamber Music Academy in Prague, marking a key step in its international profile.
The group is Ireland’s first all-Chinese Baroque ensemble and only the fourth dedicated Baroque ensemble from China, while maintaining a diverse cultural identity with members connected to Ireland, Spain, Mainland& Taiwan of China.
Its four members bring exceptional credentials: Junhe Qiu (violin), the first Chinese string player to receive the Recital Artist Diploma from the Royal Irish Academy of Music; Chang Liu (violin), member of the Dublin City Chamber Orchestra; Ensheng Chen (cello), a Master’s graduate from the Royal Irish Academy of Music; and Celia Yizhen He Chu (harpsichord/clarinet), a scholar at the same institution. Together, they deliver historically informed performances full of precision, color, and energy.
Lanyin Music
Lanyin Music is proud to be the very first Chinese traditional music band in Ireland, bringing the timeless sounds of China to a new audience. Founded with the vision of sharing the beauty and depth of Chinese musical heritage, our ensemble introduces Irish listeners to instruments that carry thousands of years of history and culture. At the heart of our music is the Guzheng, a graceful zither known for its shimmering tones and expressive range, often described as the sound of flowing water. Alongside it is the Pipa, a four-stringed lute whose intricate plucking techniques and vibrant melodies have echoed through Chinese history for over two millennia. Completing the trio is the Dizi, the bamboo flute, with its bright and lyrical voice that can shift seamlessly between joy and sorrow. Together, these instruments create a soundscape that is both ancient and alive, offering audiences a rare chance to experience the traditions of the East in the heart of Ireland. Through our performances, we aim not only to entertain but also to build bridges between cultures, allowing the people of Ireland to hear, feel, and connect with the rich musical soul of China.
